Welcoming in 2011

Happy New Year! We are excited to usher in a new year over here at Midnight Snack, but of course we spent some time reflecting on the past year. 2010 was great for us as we developed our products and picked up some new craft shows. Being a part of Etsy Dallas again was incredible, an experience and benefit that is unrivaled. We even got to see some Midnight Snack on television in 2010! We can only hope that 2011 is even better! Check back soon for a list of upcoming shows, new products, and updates on what's going on with us! Below are some highlights from our year!

How a Couple of Crafters Do Halloween

Halloween is one of our favorite holidays. That combined with our compulsive need to make things usually results in some pretty elaborate Halloween costumes. This year was no different. Check out how a couple of crafters do Halloween. Here are some pictures from our trip to Austin.




I am La Catrina, while he is a sugar skull, or a more common term for these getups refer to the Mexican holiday Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). It was a fantastic time and we are already thinking about next Halloween!

Several ways to Search

This post on the Etsy Dallas blog reminded me to tell all you guys about several ways to find Midnight Snack items just by searching on Etsy!

First off, you can find some Midnight Snack items, as well as other Etsy Dallas team members items on Etsy just by searching one simple term. Type "EtsyDallas2010" into the search bar and check out all the great items from our selected members!

If you want to look just for me, Midnight Snack, then type "midnightsnack" into the search bar. Notice that there is no space in "midnightsnack" when using it in the search bar. That term will pull up a few, but not all, of my items and help direct you to my store!

Other search terms that will undoubtedly result in a Midnight Snack items are, plushes, food plushes, miniature jewelry, and embellished clothing.

I finally mastered the food-on-a-stick design

Midnight Snack is known for food plushes. So it has irked me to no end that I hadn't figured out how to make realistic looking food-on-a-stick. Well, thanks to my genius husband, I figured it out yesterday.

See the trick is, just like the real food, the plush needs a stick that goes all the way through it. Otherwise it flops forward or backward and looks sort of soggy. But what kind of stick works? Nothing too hard as that poses a risk of harm when using the plush, but it still has to be rigid. Guess what we landed on? A pool noodle! Thank god the stores are starting to dump their pool accessories and these are about $1 at most stores.

So here it is, my first food-on-a-stick plush, the corn dog on a stick! Now think of the possibilities.

Came to Party, Left with a Sewing Machine

In case you haven't heard (I've been slow to post lately), the Etsy Dallas Craft Party was a huge success! We had a huge turnout, making our party the biggest in the entire world! Woo hoo go team! Oh, and did I mention that I won that oh-so-lovely, brand new sewing machine? Heck yes I did! And boy it couldn't have come at a better time. My $90 Brother sewing machine purchased 5 years ago is on it's last leg.

So, now everyone is all "Did you set up your machine, yet?" or "What have you made with your new machine?" And I'm all "Cool your jets people, I want to get this set up right!" But the truth is that I had to get new furniture. See previous to know I had a sewing machine and serger machine and only enough space for one. So I would have to switch from one to the other as needed, moving one from the table top to the floor whenever I needed to switch. It was a huge pain. So, I decided quite some time ago I needed a bigger work station. Now I had even bigger motivation to go out and buy it. So this is what I purchased from IKEA.
It's great because the wide desk is open underneath meaning I can put two machines on the top, one on either side, and move my chair around instead of the machines around. And the extra storage is a bonus, too. So, I'm working on getting the craft room ready for the new furniture and new machine and promise I will start making some awesome new items soon.

It's a Party and You're Invited

Etsy is having a global craft party! Groups all over the world are having parties on June 18th as part of the celebration for Etsy's birthday. Our very own local group, Etsy Dallas, is partnering with the Make Studios to throw the party for our neck of the woods.

Look that's us, currently in second place!

To make it even more interesting, there is sort of a contest going on for the top 50 largest parties in the world. There is some swag on the line here so as expected the competition is pretty brutal. Currently Dallas is in the #2 spot! RSVP's are being tracked through meetup.com and we need your help to push us to the #1 spot. Also, we'd love to have you at the party where you can meet the Etsy Dallas team members, see the Make Studios, play, and have fun with a group of crafty and artsy people. It's really going to be a blast. So RSVP ASAP to the Etsy Dallas Craft Party! We'll see you there.

Your Plans for Tomorrow

Guess what tomorrow is? That's right it's Saturday! But it's also the Etsy Dallas Spring Bash! We've been getting ready for such a long time, it's hard to believe it's finally here! We hope that you'll pull on some galoshes, hit up an ATM, and come on down to party with us at South Side on Lamar. Between 11 am - 5 pm there will be tons of great stuff to see and do. There are over 50 artists selling their handmade goods. All of the stuff for sale at the Spring Bash is fantastic because Etsy Dallas takes the time hand select it's members. There will be drinks by Absinthe bar, a live DJ, and a photo booth. Not to mention tons and tons of fantastic shopping.

Be sure to stop by the Midnight Snack booth. We've got plushes, including our new fried egg pillow, clothing, jewelry and accessories. Some of the stuff we have for the Spring Bash hasn't even made it onto to our website yet so come by and see what we've got!

Rejuvinated from the holidays

Whew! We thought we'd never regain our momentum after the holidays. We had a great time at our first Christmas in our new house. It was even technically considered a White Christmas, something you don't see here very often. I received many new crafty things to play with for Christmas including a shiny new serger machine and some silver clay to try out for my jewelry making! Stay tuned to the blog to hear how I learn these new things as I go.

Through out all the hustle and bustle of the holidays I did manage to get some new things in the store to stop by and check them out!

The OC and Midnight Snack

It wont be long now before the Glitterati are all spotted toting around our Oven Roasted Turkey Plush. The OCWeekley blog has featured us along with some other pretty cool Thanksgiving themed products. Since they pinpoint all the hot activities and trends of the area, we think it's pretty neat that we've been spotted! Maybe we wont see the Oven Roasted Turkey Plush being toted down the red carpet any time soon, but we think it's perfect for your fabulous Thanksgiving table!
